I worked as a sports reporter, assistant sports editor and eventually the sports editor of Texas State University's student publication, the University Star, from October 2018 to May 2020. During this time, I wrote or co-wrote 48 stories and edited hundreds while maintaining and delegating a staff of 10-15.

Texas State men’s basketball alumnus Nijal Pearson never traveled outside of the U.S. Now, Pearson is not only moving abroad but also fulfilling his lifelong dream, a bittersweet feeling as he reaches professional status but also moves away from the place he calls home.

Less than two months after his final Texas State victory, Sun Belt Player of the Year Nijal Pearson signed his first professional contract with a member of the LNB Pro A, France’s premier professional basketball league, on Tuesday.

BOBCATS SIGN NFL CONTRACTS

Three former Texas State athletes saw their professional hopes come to reality over the past week with former linebacker Bryan London II signing to the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday. On Saturday, former offensive lineman Aaron Brewer signed to the Tennessee Titans and former linebacker Frankie Griffin joined the Green Bay Packers as free agents announced by the teams.

While all of the gyms in San Marcos are closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Texas State Recreation Center is still up and running virtually with a modified online group fitness schedule.

When seniors Nijal Pearson and Eric Terry took on Appalachian State in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Championship Tournament on March 11, they thought it would be their last game in Strahan Arena. They didn't know it would be the last game of their collegiate careers.

After postponing spring sports seasons and closing the Sun Belt Championship Tournaments on Thursday, the Sun Belt announced on Monday that spring sports will not resume for the 2020 season.

UPDATE- The Sun Belt Conference announced early Sunday afternooon that the semifinal and final rounds of the men's and women's Sun Belt Conference Championship, held Saturday-Sunday, will be canceled due to a growing coronavirus concern.

Texas State's track and field teams each took third place in the Sun Belt Indoor Championship Meet on Tuesday, February 25,  and sophomore Sadi Giles did her part for the team by winning the 60-meter dash-twice.

 Texas State football appears to be starting the season anew and has signed 18 recruits alongside newly hired offensive coaches Brian Hamilton and offensive coordinator Jacob Peeler by the time National Signing Day rolled around on Wednesday.

 Texas State track and field combined to win two events and take home 14 top-ten Sun Belt performances at the Red Raider Invitational on Friday. The meet, which held competitors from the Big 12, Pac 12 and Conference USA, marked a trend of early-season top marks as they continue towards the Sun Belt Indoor Championships.

 After leading by as many as 18 points in the third period, Texas State women’s basketball fell just short of their first conference win in a 73-67 loss to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns on Saturday afternoon at Strahan Arena.

 After some tough losses and a slow start in conference, Texas State took it home with two straight wins at Strahan Arena, coming back with a 78-66 win over Coastal Carolina on Thursday and pulling off a convincing 82-57 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday.

CHINA'S OLYMPIC TEAM ROWS THROUGH SAN MARCOS

 AfterAs fall and winter sports pack their bags for break, the Chinese Olympic Rowing team settles in to San Marcos. The National Rowing Team of China landed in San Marcos Nov. 20 and have made the Texas State Recreation Center  their pit stop in a series of destinations en route to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

  Two days after 40-year head volleyball coach Karen Chisum announced her retirement, Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director Kacey Shoemake announced former Associate Head Coach Sean Huiet as Chisum’s successor on Wednesday.

   In their second home game of the season, the Texas State women’s basketball team outscored the University of Texas of the Permian Basin by nearly double, defeating UTPB 83-45 on Saturday morning to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Despite three straight losses and a nosedive in their offensive performance, the ‘Cats are back at home and favored to win this Saturday as they face off against South Alabama for a last-ditch effort at bowl eligibility.

  For the first time in program history, the Texas State men’s track team won first place in the Sun Belt Outdoor Championship meet in Jonesboro, Arkansas on May 10-12. The women’s side took runner-up in the meet, with both teams racking up eight individual titles, 21 all-conference selections and a new school record.

   Texas State women’s track and field team pulled off a three-peat conference win at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships Feb. 18 and 19 at the Southern Alabama track. The men’s team racked up 119 total points for a third place finish overall.
